A Sacramento native, Jim Rushford attended California State University at Sacramento, earning his B.A. in Government in 1975 and his law degree from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law (J.D.) in Law in 1979. Mr. Rushford was admitted to California State Bar in 1979. He served as a Deputy District Attorney of Ventura County from 1980 to 1981 where he handled about a jury trial per month and over 60 court trials. Between 1981 and 1983, he served as a minority consultant for the State of California’s Senate Judiciary Committee where he worked directly for Vice Chairman, Senator Ed Davis, and other Republican Senators, reviewing legislation, drafting legislation and assisting the Senators move legislation through the Senate and Assembly. Mr. Rushford served as a Commissioner for the California Fair Political Practices Commission from 1993 to 1997, appointed to the four-year term by Attorney General Dan Lungren. As a Commissioner on the FPPC, he voted on policy issues and sat in review of proposed settlements and administrative law decisions. He also served as a Commissioner for the Bipartisan California Commission on Internet Political Practices in 2003, appointed by the then Chairman of the FPPC. The commission evaluated the impact of the internet on political processes and published a report of its findings.
He is admitted to practice in all jurisdictions in the State of California as well as the Northern and Eastern U.S. District Courts. He has conducted numerous jury trials over his 40 years of practice. He has argued appellate cases before California Appellate courts in the First District, Third District and Fifth District as well as cases before the US District Court for the Ninth Circuit. He enjoys and “AV” rating by Martindale Hubble, the highest peer review rating for a practicing attorney. Mr. Rushford has also been a licensed Real Estate Broker since 2005.
Mr. Rushford was a founding partner of Rushford & Bonotto, LLP, an AV rated firm that provided quality litigation service throughout California for over 22 years. In April 2019, that firm merged to become Gurnee Mason Rushford Bonotto & Forestiere. His law practice continues to be focused on litigation in cases ranging from simple rear-end automobile matters to catastrophic injury cases, to real estate matters and an occasional business dispute.
In addition to his law practice, Mr. Rushford currently volunteers as a Judge Pro Tem and serves on the Panel of Arbitrators for the Sacramento County Superior Court. He is a member of the State Bar of California, the Sacramento County Bar Association and the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). He proudly served our country in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970; the last year as leader of a combat weather team at An Khe, Vietnam. For recreation he enjoys shooting, motorcycling, hot rods, gardening, reading and following politics.
