John Mason graduated with high honors from the University of California, Berkeley (B.S. 1988) and the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law (J.D.1993). Since his admission to the Bar in 1993, he has maintained a broad-based civil litigation, trial and appellate practice with an emphasis on the defense of complex matters involving commercial disputes, personal injury, product liability, professional negligence (including medical and legal malpractice), wage and hour, class action and unfair business practice claims. Mr. Mason has extensive experience defending clients in cases involving the cemetery and funeral industry and frequently serves as a speaker and author for death care industry trade organizations such as the California Funeral Directors Association (CFDA), the Cemetery and Mortuary Association of California (CMAC) and the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association (ICCFA).
Mr. Mason is rated “AV Preeminent” by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest possible ranking with respect to legal ability and ethics, and is also a Northern California “Super Lawyer” in business litigation. He is a member of the State Bar of California, the Sacramento, Placer and Los Angeles County Bar Associations, the Association of Defense Counsel of Northern California and Nevada, the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel, and the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys. Mr. Mason has a statewide practice and is admitted in all California Federal district courts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. In 2003, Mr. Mason joined the law firm (then known as Gurnee & Daniels) and, in 2007, became a named partner in the firm.
Prior to entering the practice of law, Mr. Mason served as a Consultant to the California State Assembly, Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee. During law school, he was a member of the Moot Court Honors Board. Throughout his career, Mr. Mason has been actively involved in a number of civic and non-profit organizations in the greater Sacramento region. He is a graduate of the Leadership Roseville program and has served on the City of Roseville’s Growth Management Visioning Committee, Community Priorities Advisory Committee and Economic Development Advisory Committee. Mr. Mason served as President of the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors in 2021 and currently serves on its Political Action Committee. An avid animal lover, Mr. Mason is a former Board President of both the Sacramento SPCA and Placer County SPCA. He has also served on the Board of Directors of KidsFirst (formerly known as the Placer County Child Abuse Prevention Council) and is an active member of the Rotary Club of Roseville.
